| Dylan Root |
In the weeks since Dylan Root opened fire during a prayer meeting at the Emanuel AME Church there has been much acidic rhetoric calling for the removal of the Confederate flag, not just from atop the South Carolina state house, but everywhere. I have a news flash for those who continue to make this knee-jerk request: the flag had nothing to do with the act of violence perpetrated by Dylan Root. True enough, there are some troubling aspects of young Root's life, but the events of that horrendous Wednesday night are the result of mental illness, not a piece of cloth.
My opinion, which doesn't fit into the politically correct (PC) agenda, has been labeled as "hurtful, racist, and problematic". In actuality, the thing that is hurtful and problematic is the fact that these same people want to change that part of history that isn't to their liking and, time and time again, the target has been the south's confederate heritage. Instead of worrying about the past, they should be concerned about the present. The weekend after the Charlotte shooting occurred, there were something like 25 murders in Chicago but, yet, there was no outrage over that. Could it be because those were committed by African-Americans against other African-Americans? And, of course, it would not be PC to treat your own like you treat others who commit the same offense.
